National Simultaneous Storytime happened belatedly last Monday with Northern Adelaide Senior College Librarian, Lisa Southon, reading Lucinda Gifford’s Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas.
Read to children in our dedicated crèche facility, Lisa brought the glitz and glamour to our smallest members of our NASC community.
“National Simultaneous Story time has been around for 20 years,” says Lisa.
“It is the ability of all young people to participate in storytime which helps with our literacy and socialising skills.
“The idea is that as many people as possible in the country meet at a designated area whether it be a school, a crèche, a library etc., and all at the same time read the same book.”
Lisa says that Northern Adelaide Senior College has hosted National Simultaneous Storytime for the last three years, but she herself has been a participant for over 15 years.
“Literacy is best started when children are little because they absorb it and it’s a very important part of development, both socially and cognitively.
“It helps children listen to how words are spoken, to learn the skills of sitting quietly and the listening skills involved and story time is essential for any young person.”
Lucinda Gifford’s Whitney and Britney: Chicken Divas follows the adventure of two chickens who disappear each night much to the perplexity of Dora who they live with.
“The chicken divas were quite good,” says Lisa.
“They gave a little bit of insight that sometimes you need to have a second job such as egg laying (you just can’t rely on being a chicken diva!)
“It’s probably a very important message for anyone who is considering the entertainment field that you do need a second job.”
