International Women’s Day celebrates #EachforEqual, drawing attention to the difference individuals can make to create an equal world this March 8.
As part of the celebration, Northern Adelaide Senior College women’s and drama studies students attended Adelaide International Women’s Day Breakfast last Friday, hosted by Senator Penny Wong.
“We want to celebrate the extraordinary achievements and progress women have made, we want to recognize the courageous women who paved the way for us and we want to rededicate ourselves to the project of achieving true gender equality,” says Senator the Hon Penny Wong.
“We must be dedicated to supporting and enabling other women, including the next generation, because just as we are the beneficiaries of the courageous, persistent women who came before us, we must always be looking to help pave the way for those that follow us.
“Whether it’s in our families, our workplaces, the public square or social media, we do need to have each other’s backs and that support for each other is as important as ever.”
Hayley G. and Stacey C., NASC students who attended the event for the first time, thought that the event was a great day for celebrating the achievements of women.
“The breakfast was good. The speeches were nice, they were very inspiring,” says Hayley.
“I think it was ok. It was a good day to celebrate women,” agrees Stacey.
They both think that more needs to be done to create equality for all genders, especially in regards to domestic violence.
“We learnt more about abuse against women, I have more of an awareness now,” says Hayley.
“They always reference when guys do something bad, but when women do something bad, they don’t put that stuff out – I can’t fully support it,” states Stacey.
They both recommend students to participate in the International Women’s Day Breakfast in the future, as it’s a great experience to see and hear what people have to say for equal gender rights.
“It seemed like we going to a fancy, fancy restaurant,” laughs Hayley.
“It was a pretty chill vibe,” says Stacey.
