Essential Mathematics, Research Project B and English merits were awarded to six Northern Adelaide Senior College students at the 2018 SACE Merit Ceremony hosted by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC last Tuesday.
Students Naomi, Dion, Siddarth, Emily, Tejaspreet and Milla received their merits at Government House beside 902 students from across the state.
Merits are awarded to students who obtain a perfect score in a Stage 2 subject.
“It has not been an easy journey to achieve our merits; we’ve had to struggle with our deficiencies, grapple with the syllabus, and fight our constant lack of sleep,” opens Judah Salem Tan, student guest speaker.
“It is our teachers who have nurtured, unearthed, guided, and refined the rest of our potential.”
Emily, a year 13 NASC student awarded a merit in essential mathematics, agrees that her maths teacher John and the support she experienced at NASC contributed to her achievement.
“NASC is not like mainstream school,” says Emily.
“John, treats you like an adult and he doesn’t condescend people if they don’t understand so it’s a very welcoming environment than other schools.”
Emily was quite surprised at receiving her merit at government house.
“There was 900 students there accepting all sorts of awards and it was very formal,” says Emily.
“I didn’t realise at the time how little people actually got it until they went through how many people won awards,” says Emily.
“I felt quite proud then because I was actually quite high in the whole state.”
Emily plans to complete her SACE this year and hopefully attend Flinders University’s Bachelor of Creative Arts in Costume Design.
“You still have to make patterns so that’s maths,” jokes Emily.
John Willemse, maths teacher at NASC, attended the event to support our students’ achievements.
“I was thrilled to witness my three maths students accept their award and I was disappointed that I could not see the other three students who were awarded their merits simultaneously,” says John.
“I am very proud of them all.”
Northern Adelaide Senior College would like to congratulate these students and commend them for their hard work and outstanding results for 2018.
