Women in STEM Breakfast
Northern Adelaide Senior College science and psychology students participated in the eighth annual Women in STEM breakfast last Thursday over Zoom.
The annual event is hosted by Thebarton Senior College and connects students with women who work in STEM industries.
“A lot of schools participate and we have a whole range of guest speakers from whole different areas and disciplines,” says Virginia Holt, Maths and Science Leader at NASC.
“We come together where women can discuss and feel like that they’ve got the space where they can talk about potential careers in STEM.”
The event hosted three female speakers; 2021 Young Australian of the Year, Isobel Marshall; Megan Wark, Structural Engineer at Aurecon and astrophysicist Dr. Clare Kenyon.
Each woman shared their journey into entering a STEM career and their hopes and efforts in increasing female representation in the STEM workforce.
“The STEM breakfast has been great. The zoom conference actually worked quite well as it meant that we could have more students attend,” says Virginia.
“The students enjoyed the event. They were quite inspired by the journey of these women and they asked some great questions.
“Some of the speakers had a very convoluted journey to get where they were and I think that was useful, especially to the adult students of our school,”
“It allayed some concerns that you don’t have to go to school and then into university. There are many pathways to get where you want to go.”
Northern Adelaide Senior College offers a range of science, maths, and technology subjects. NASC is currently accepting mid-semester year 11 enrolments. Call Student Services on (08) 7285 1600 to organise an appointment.
